Acton Skip Hire - Health & Safety Policy
Acton Skip Hire is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety across all operations. This policy sets out the general approach the skip hire and rubbish company takes to protect employees, contractors, customers and the public while delivering skip hire, rubbish removal and waste collection services. Our objective is to prevent injury and ill health, reduce environmental harm and manage risk proportionately to the scale of our operations.Policy Statement
We will: ensure that responsibilities are clearly defined and communicated; provide appropriate training, supervision and equipment; and maintain systems to identify hazards, assess risk and implement controls. This policy applies to our skip hire company activities, waste removal operations and all work carried out on behalf of the rubbish removal company.
The policy is implemented through risk assessments, safe working procedures and regular review. We aim to: reduce accidents and incidents, comply with applicable health and safety requirements, and continuously improve safety performance. All staff, including drivers, site operatives and administrative personnel, are expected to support these aims and participate in safety activities.
Roles and Responsibilities
Every member of the organisation has a role to play. Management will provide leadership, adequate resources and training. Supervisors will monitor day-to-day compliance and provide clear instructions. Employees and operatives must follow procedures, use personal protective equipment and report unsafe conditions. Contractors engaged for rubbish collection or for skip delivery are required to comply with the standards set out in this policy.Specific duties include:
- Risk assessment: identify, assess and control hazards associated with skip placement, loading and transport.
- PPE and equipment: supply and maintain suitable PPE and ensure equipment is inspected regularly.
- Training: deliver practical training in manual handling, safe loading and vehicle safety for the waste removal service team.
Operational controls are mandatory for all activities. Manual handling techniques, maximum loading guidance and segregation rules for different waste types must be followed. The rubbish company and skip hire teams will use appropriate lifting aids, communicate with customers to clarify acceptable waste types and ensure skips are safely located to avoid obstructing highways or access points.
Vehicle, Loading and Site Safety
Vehicles and drivers are a central focus of our safety system. Regular vehicle maintenance, daily driver checks and safe loading methods are compulsory. Drivers must secure loads, observe weight limits and use signage and barriers where necessary. For skip delivery and collection, traffic management and clear customer instructions reduce the risk of collision, slips or falls.Working near the public demands additional precautions. Operatives must wear high-visibility clothing, maintain clear walkways and use cones or temporary barriers when placing or removing skips. Noise, dust and manual handling controls will be applied to protect both staff and the public, with appropriate measures such as dampening dusty materials and limiting noisy operations.
Accident, Incident and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly and investigated to identify root causes and corrective actions. First aid provision and clear emergency procedures are in place for site incidents, vehicle accidents and hazardous material spills. The rubbish removal company will ensure that incidents are recorded, that learning is shared and that appropriate remedial measures are implemented without delay.Hazardous Waste and Environmental Controls
Handling of hazardous materials (including asbestos, chemicals, batteries and solvents) is strictly controlled. Where such items are identified, skips will not be accepted until appropriate arrangements are made. Waste segregation, correct labelling and safe containment are mandatory to prevent pollution. Environmental protection measures include preventing run-off, using licensed disposal routes and minimising nuisance to neighbours.Contractors and suppliers used by the skip hire company must demonstrate suitable competence, insurance and health and safety arrangements. Regular audits, toolbox talks and site inspections will be used to monitor compliance. Performance indicators and records will be maintained to measure training completion, vehicle checks and incident trends for the waste management operation.
